Inflatable Trampoline Bridge in Paris: AZC

This is already making the rounds and likely to be everywhere soon, but it’s just too fun not to post about, especially since we do like a unique bridge. Paris-based architecture firm Atelier Zündel Cristea (AZC) proposed the above bridge in response to a competition brief for A Bridge in Paris. With enough bridges already in existence over the river Seine to facilitate the flow of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, AZC thought it would be fun to offer a more playful way to get from La Rive Gauche to La Rive Droite and vice versa: an inflatable bridge equipped with giant trampolines, allowing visitors to bounce across the river. Each section measures 30 meters in diameter with a trampoline mesh stretched in the center. Held together by cord and inflated with air, the bridge forms three subtle arches.

Though AZC’s design received third prize in the competition, I have a feeling that it will become a reality via someone, somewhere, even if only as a temporary structure. It’s just too great not to.

The Journey of Sebastien Errazuriz

Chilean born, New York based, Sebastien Errazuriz (previously here) is both artist and designer, often blurring the lines between the two. His work is always smart, innovative and humorous, as well as often political. It ranges from public urban art installations to sculpture and furniture/product design. He even has a few outrageous fashion items. His obsession with the dichotomies of life and death is expressed through his various series on death and religion, and his criticism of Wall Street comes into play in his street installations, amazing Drowning in Debt salt & pepper shakers as well as his Occupy Chairs.

There’s plenty more to see on his website and you can watch the interview below for even more. A book on his work was published last month by Gestalten and available here.

Isabelle Wenzel: Figures & More

German photographer Isabelle Wenzel splits her time between Amsterdam and her hometown of Wuppertal, Germany. In the process of creating her playful and surprising images she tries to explore bigger meanings and clichés such as the relationships between photographers and their models as well as femininity vs masculinity.

Song Board: Central Saint Martins

These 2940 yellow and black plastic spheres across a 35m-long wall made up the fun and engaging interactive pop-up installation at London’s King’s Cross station called Song Board. Designed by the students at Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London, Song Board invited passers-by to rotate the matrix of spheres and create unique patterns, images, and messages. Some came prepared with pre-arranged displays to print on the board and others just rotated them relentlessly, listening to the sound the balls made when rotated.

Song Board was one of the many projects (see also Bus-Tops) put into place by the Mayor’s office throughout the city during the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Studio Bertjan Pot: Masks

With Halloween just around the corner, these seemed appropriate. Dutch designer Bertjan Pot has a fascination for textiles and materials in general. While working and playing with materials and ideas he designed a collection of furniture and lighting with fellow friend and designer Daniel White. In similar fashion, these masks were initially the result of a materials experiment.

From Pot’s website:
I wanted to find out if by stitching a rope together I could make a large flat carpet. Instead of flat, the samples got curvy. When I was about to give up on the carpet, Vladi came up with the idea of shaping the rope into masks. The possibilities are endless, I’m meeting new faces every day.

The masks, which started in 2010, have become an ongoing project and are available for purchase.

John Wood & Paul Harrison

I just spent a ridiculous amount of time on Bristol-based artists John Wood and Paul Harrison’s website and found myself smiling throughout.

Working together for almost 20 years, these two straight-faced Brits explore the physical and psychological parameters of the world around them through a series of drawings that lead to their constructed video works. Initially their videos were more single-shot studies, but they have since evolved into longer pieces with a sequence of actions taking place within a confined space.

If you like what you see here, and you’ve got some time, work your way through the alphabet on their site; you’ll be in for guaranteed amusement. Or, take a look at the video interview below that includes several of their works in motion.

Geraldo Zamproni: Pillow Talk

Contemporary Brazilian artist Geraldo Zamproni graduated with a degree in Architecture/Urbanism and seems to be playing with both in his art. His large red inflatable pillows are perfect examples. These fun cushions have been squeezed under museum ramps and concrete slabs just to name a couple of examples. This week at least one of the pillows can be found “at large” on 14th Street in NYC as part of the Art in Odd Places event. I looked for the pillow on Saturday while roaming 14th St. trying to find the not-very-clearly-mapped-out works in the festival, but it seems to have been sitting all the way east between Avenues B and C as per the top photograph that I found.

Zamproni’s pillow installations (which have a similar fun surprise quality —as well as color — to the Red Ball Project) have appeared in museums throughout Brazil, from Brasilia to Curitiba, in Peru, Argentina, and Spain. I’m going to keep my eyes peeled (I’ve always found that expression a little disturbing) this week to see if the AiOP catalogue’s “at large” location description will include points on 14th Street closer to Union Square.

You can see Zamproni inflating one of his pillows in the video below. Interesting to see how he even enters it to smooth out the seams:

Atheist Shoes

Continuing with her recent interest in shoe design, Daniela pointed me to the Atheist Shoes website which a friend had told her about. Probably one of the things we liked best is the catchy line on their impressively over-funded kickstarter page: “Now atheists have soles too!”

What seems to have started as a semi-goof, took off on reddit and then kickstarter, taking the prototype of the godless, Bauhaus-inspired shoe and making it a reality. Sure, the handmade, nice quality leather shoes look nice, but the concept is what really appeals to us. From the atheist soles to the black hole logo (“an inviting void, an exquisite blank canvas, begging to be filled with something meaningful to you”), to the idea of donating 10% of their profits to secular charities, demonstrating that you don’t need god to be good.

Jean-François Fourtou: Tombée du Ciel

French artist Jean-François Fourtou has always wanted to be an architect. Through a series of experiments in his studio in Madrid, Fourtou played with dimension and proportion, mostly distorting them, and applying these experiments to a decade-long project of installations on his property in Morocco. Tombée du Ciel (Fallen from the Sky), the upside down house inspired by his grandparents’ home in France, reproduced to scale and plopped on its roof with its entrance via window, is one of these works. Reminiscent of scenes from books such as Alice in Wonderland or Gulliver’s Travels, the experience of walking on the ceilings (or, if you’re Lionel Richie, perhaps dancing) must evoke both a disorienting and funny feeling. Can’t help thinking of Stray Light Grey a little bit.

Currently, Fourtou is exhibiting a version of his Tombée du Ciel as part of the Festival Lille3000 Fantastic 2012 in Belgium.

Architectural Shoes

This post is dedicated to Daniela who called yesterday and mentioned that designing shoes in Rome for a month is the latest on her to-do list. Not being much of a shoe person myself, I foolishly questioned why that would be cool. I get it now. Though judging from this list, The Netherlands might be the place to go.

From top to bottom, left to right: Czech designer Pavlina Miklasova draws inspiration from wooden models of the Hellenic History Museum of Athens.

Dutch designer Leanie van der Vyver’s Scary Beautiful forces a new way of walking, leaning forward while refining a painfully fragile balance. See the walking video here.

French shoe designer Benoît Méléard designs for many designers but these crazy wooden platforms are from his collection.

Dutch designer Rosanne Begsma’s Pumptouw.

All of Dutch designer Marloes ten Bhömer’s collections are pretty radical. Beigefoldedshoe uses the tanned leather from the soles as the uppers too. Bottom photos are hers as well: Noheelshoe.

RISD alum Martha Davis designed the sculptural wooden sandals, second from bottom.

Oooh, and there’s also this 3D printed Macedonia Shoe designed by Finnish designer Janne Kyattenen. Wild.

Bus-Tops in London

This is such a great public art project. From January 2012 up until just yesterday, a set of 30 red and black LED screens were installed on the roofs of bus shelters throughout the many boroughs of London. The project, sponsored by the Arts Council of England and the Olympics, was titled Bus-Tops and projected images up to those traveling on the upper level of London’s double-decker buses. If that concept alone isn’t nice enough, the added interactive aspect allowing anyone, of any age, to draw and submit their own artwork on the Bus-Tops site, with a chance for it to be projected on one of the many screens, is just genius. Taking a look at all the works (and there are hundreds of them ranging from typographic to illustrative, abstract to realist) showcased on the project’s website, some of the kid submissions are equally charming to those of their more sophisticated and slicker counterparts.

It’s a shame these couldn’t continue indefinitely. It would be great to see similar ideas executed in other cities as well.

Chair Wear: Bernotat & Co.

This is a fun way to ‘dress up’ your old chairs. Dutch designers Anke Bernotat and Jan Jacob Borstlap, along with their team, look to “heighten the contrast between the mundane and surprising.” Their challenge is to recombine the old with the new. Their Chair Wear line is the solution. From pockets to turtlenecks, these old, classic chairs, come to life with their new outfits. Very clever.

Karyn Olivier: Sculptural Play

I vote Karyn Olivier to design the next playground in town. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Olivier studied undergrad and graduate school in the U.S. Her work includes sculpture, photography, videos, and drawings, but here I’ve just included some of her sculptures. These pieces, at first glance, are humorous and playful, but the artist speaks of nostalgia, betrayal, dysfunction, danger, and isolation in her work. Maybe not the best words to associate with a real playground. Nonetheless, these are quirky and appealing sculptures that seem to call out to be played with.
