Hense: Recontextualizing Church

What could be better than a graffiti mural? Multiple graffiti murals on one building. In this case, a Church in Washington D.C. Atlanta-based artist Hense was commissioned to paint the former church in D.C.’s up-and-coming arts district. Along with a small crew, some rollers, brushes, spray paint, acrylics and more, Hense and his team covered every inch of the structure with de Kooning-esque colors and Pollock-esque splatters and scribbles. Talk about an extreme makeover! The vibrantly colored transformation sits across from the future home of a 20,000 sq. ft. museum, how appropriate for this sculptural work. Hense’s installation is the perfect combination of contemporary abstract art and classic architecture that defines the artsy neighborhood. You can see Hense’s latest painted building in Atlanta, the WCAC, over here.

Swiss artists André and Michel Décosterd who make up Cod.Act combine their talents of music composition and architecture in their artistic performance and interactive installations. Their devices translate physical movement into sound.

Their Pendulum Choir is probably the most surprising. A choir of nine men is harnessed onto hydraulic jacks that react to their voices. The swinging and rotating singers seem to hang by their toes while leaning at what look to be close to 45-degree angles, coming very close to each other yet designed to never collide. Kind of zany, funny, and at the same time a little creepy.

Cod.Act have many other creations including the Cycloid-E—a pendulum of metallic tubes equipped with sound sources and with measuring instruments capable of making them resonate according to their rotations—and the Ex-Pharao, a mechanical apparatus composed of cables and hydraulic levers that allows the visitor to modify an opera by Schoenberg in real time. Much more to see on their site.

Leo Villareal: The Bay Lights

If you’re a frequent reader of this blog, you probably know that we like light-related art and installations. You might even know that we’re fans of Leo Villareal’s work (previously here, and here.) But only a crazy-loyal follower with an exceptional memory would know that we admired an LED light show a year and a half ago on the Bosphorous Bridge and wondered to ourselves why there’s nothing like that in the U.S. So, now, amazingly enough, all three of these elements have come together in Leo Villareal’s (we’re convinced he must be cloned in order to keep up with all the major projects he’s unveiled the past few months!) latest work The Bay Lights. With 25,000 LEDs strung along 5 miles worth of suspension cables, The Bay Lights project is the world’s largest LED light sculpture and it’s all taking place on the San Francisco Bay Bridge every night for the next two years.

Villareal has come up with unique algorithms that take their inspiration from the waves and wind of the San Francisco Bay as well as from the traffic that flows over the bridge. The light show was officially unveiled two nights ago. If you’re not in San Francisco, like us, you can take a look at the video below to see the animated lights in action.

Many of ARM Architects‘ structures (previously here and here), have unconventional lines and a surreal quality, breaking beyond the boundaries of traditional architecture, and the recently completed Hamer Hall in Melbourne is no exception. ARM designed the redevelopment of the concert hall integrating it with new public spaces and the riverfront. They retained some of John Turscott’s original interiors but there certainly is a spectacular use of concrete in the redesigned foyer and exterior as well as state of the art acoustics and contemporary theater technology in the main hall. All around, pretty stunning.

Imagine a home in which you could skateboard to the dining room table, or, for that matter, on it. That’s just what ex world champion pro-skater Pierre-André Senizergues (PAS) turned Sole Technology founder envisioned when he came up with PAS House or Casa PAS. Senizergues created the concept, but Gil Le Bon Delapointe is responsible for the cool design of the full-scale 753 sq. foot version that includes a sofa, bed, and even kitchen appliances. The skateboard ramp-style structure allows the inhabitants to skate or bike on virtually every surfaces. The prototype was made with a Malibu location in mind, overlooking the ocean, with three separate living areas connected by a continuous ribbon-like skateable surface. The execution of the actual house will be overseen by architect François Perrin.

Now, starting Friday, March 1st, the Cuban-born artist will be exhibiting 10 massive sculptures along Park Avenue here in NYC. This outdoor exhibit, titled No Limits, embodies some of New York City’s most iconic landmarks in a playfully twisted way. These architecturally elastic works include: the Chrysler Building, Citicorp Center, Empire State, the Flatiron, Helmsley Building, MetLife, Metropolitan Life Tower, Seagram’s, Sherry Netherland and US Courthouse. The rolling, winding and spinning 20-ft tall sculptures will be placed along the Park Avenue mall from 53rd to 67th Streets. Plus, you can join the artist for a walking tour on Saturday, March 2nd, from 4 to 5:30, meeting at the corner of 54th St. But even if you can’t make the tour, fear not, No Limits will be up through June 9th.

New Zealand-born and -based artist Mike Newson, trained as a civil engineer, has recently made the switch to focusing on his art full time. Last July Newson started creating massive mixed-media works on the destined-to-be-demolished Christchurch Normal School in New Zealand, due to damage created by last year’s 6.3 earthquake. Covering the building with 130 square meters of plywood and large-scale digital images depicting artists and others who had lived and worked in the structure, Newson opens up a dialogue between art and architecture by questioning the nature of our relationship to civic spaces. In similar fashion, Newson has also used his talents on street plywood and more recently on stretched canvas in his show Polymorphia being exhibited right now through March 9th at FirstDraft Gallery in Sydney.

This upcoming summer’s City of Dreams Pavilion—the centerpiece at Figment on Governor’s Island—will be Head in the Clouds. Designers Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang of Studio Klimoski Chang Architects (aka StudioKCA) kept sustainability in mind when they designed their entry. The armature of the structure will be made from aluminum tubes that use less material and are easier to transport than other more traditional materials. All the materials will be recyclable in an effort to minimize the carbon footprint. StudioKCA has been collecting the 53,780 water bottles and milk jugs (the amount thrown away in 1 hour in NYC!) needed to make their cloud. The jugs will be used to create 120 ‘pillows’ that will give the cloud its organic shape. The bottles with organic food coloring and water will give the interior a blue hue.

StudioKCA have started a Kickstarter campaign to pay for some of the necessary materials and structural analyses. If you’d like to back the project, head over to their page and go for it.

For the fifth edition of Times Square’s annual Heartwalk installation, which conveniently coincides with Valentine’s Day, Situ Studio has come up with an especially touching work. Using salvaged Hurricane Sandy debris from the numerous destroyed beach boardwalks, Situ created a heart-shaped “room within the city”. The weathered wooden planks lift in an elegant pattern to form an illuminated heart enclosure. I see it as a love letter to the local coastlines.  If you’re in NYC, you can visit the installation at Duffy Square through March 8th.

The Spanish art collective Penique Productions was formed in 2007 with the first inflatable project in the University of Barcelona. The group’s projects consist of color inflatables that fill up spaces erected by others, giving them a new identity. By blanketing the architecture using plastic and blowing fans, the space is simplified emphasizing the shapes and textures, ultimately generating a different atmosphere within the same structure. These installations inhabit the spaces temporarily and so far have occurred throughout Europe as well as in Mexico and Brazil. The group cite Christo as a major inspiration as well as contemporary artists Rachel Whiteread, Kimihiko Okada, Doris Salcedo, Tomas Saraceno and Ernesto Neto among others. And Em will be excited to learn that they worked with Maison Martin Margiela for Paris Fashion Week.

You can see the installation of the blue inflatable at El Claustro in Queretaro, Mexico below:

Icehotel: A Warm Story about a Cold Place

Have you ever wanted to ski in and out of an art exhibit? Well, here’s your big chance. On view now until it begins to melt (approximately mid-April) next to the Icehotel in Sweden is photographer/sculptor Anna Öhlund and lighting designer John Petterson’s light and photography exhibit titled A Warm Story about a Cold Place. Located in its own snow and ice building, the ephemeral exhibition captures the ever-shifting and momentary Arctic light and life of the frozen hotel. The light cycle in the exhibit runs 15 minutes and photographs are positioned within both circular cutouts in the walls and big free-standing ice blocks. Very cool in all meanings of the word.

There is also a companion book of the same name.

Sheraton Hushou Hot Spring Resort

It could be described as horseshoe shaped, or maybe as a partially submerged bold serif-faced ‘O’, or even possibly a dipped elongated donut, but no matter how you describe it, the newly opened Sheraton Hushou Hot Spring Resort is not your average looking hotel. Designed by Beijing-based MAD architects, this Starwood Hotel and Resort is one of 30 planned to open in the Asia Pacific region, and 15 across China in the next year.

Must be nice to know that no matter which room you book, you’ll have a water view.
