Mexican artist Jose Dávila, based in Guadalajara, works in a range of mediums including photography, sculpture, and installation. The work explores his interest in the relationship between “place and fiction, space and temporality under architecture.” His series of photographs/collages (is it collage if you’re cutting out from an image rather than adding to it?) Buildings You Must See Before You Die are prime examples of these themes. These silhouettes of famous, recognizable architectural icons take over the photo, many cases, in unrealistic proportion to their surroundings, emphasizing their grandeur.

The rest of Dávila’s work, from his light sculptures made with neon tubes paired with bricks and concrete, to his installations, really appeal to me and you might want to check them out as well on his website.

Yuri Maldkovets is a Russian photographer based in St. Petersburg. He has photographed more than 120 catalogs and albums for the State Hermitage Museum, with access to its art. In his exhibit titled New Hermitage, Malodkovets hung large black and white photographs of classic 19th century Italian marble statues wrapped in polyethylene for storage. The plastic wrap acts as a graceful veil, sculptural in its own right. The statues seem to grimace at having the plastic on them, as if trying to escape. And the series of busts smothered in the same material are a little disturbing but add an interesting quality as well.

I love all of these photographs from German photographer Robert Schlaug’s series Limited Area. Using digital manipulation, he drags pixels of color across (or, more often, up and down) to the edges, creating walls and cliff-like effects. Schlaug says he is interested in “Raising awareness in times of total sensory overload” as well as “Isolation or in distinct contrast to the surroundings—suddenly developed a unique form of language and suprisingly gets an aesthetic quality. The banal becomes the particular.”

French street artist JR (previously here and here) is at it again! This time in Hong Kong. The immensely appealing photographer has pasted 16 large-scale portraits of Hong Kong city dwellers looking up, along Connaught Road footbridge in the center of the city. And, if that isn’t fun enough, he’s got an exhibit of his first sculptures titled Pattern at Galerie Perrotin through November 10th, 2012.

Brazilian artist Vik Muniz—known for his photographs of his creations ranging from portraits made with melted chocolate, a Medusa in a plate of spaghetti, to his enormous portraits of local favela garbage workers in Rio made from the recycled garbage they collect—shot a series of iPhone photos using a Schneider iPro Lens attachment, leading to some interesting shots. The top one, in particular, is pretty amazing.

Steve Duncan is an urban historian, explorer and photographer of the urban underground. He has photographed sewers and underground rivers in cities from Antwerp to Yangon, with particular focus on the underground hydrological and wastewater infrastructure of New York City, Los Angeles, Paris, and London.

Through his photography, historical research, public talks and tours, Duncan seeks to communicate his profound enthusiasm for these underground marvels, focussing on how hydrological and wastewater technologies conform to their natural environments and relate to broader histories of design, ecology, public health and public works.
In so doing, he illuminates infrastructures that we take for granted and reminds us that contemporary challenges of wastewater are much more than a technical policy issue. They connect us to our past, and just might motivate us to demand comprehensive, long-term infrastructure planning in the future. Plus, they are beautiful places to visit.

NYC Culture on the Cheap: Weekend 8/31

Here are our free and cheap suggestions for things to do this Labor Day weekend 2012 (August 31 to September 3) in NYC. We’ve included some staycation ideas as well as fun and easy day trips within an hour or two from New York via public transportation.

1. Music- AM & Shawn Lee at the Knitting Factory. Friday 8/31. Doors 7pm. Show 8pm. $10 to $12.

2. Art –  Avery McCarthy‘s Destination: Unknown.  Includes a large, vast canvas framed by LED lights, allowing itself to be both an optical trick and aesthetic object: a modern day vanity mirror of total blackness. At Orchard Windows Gallery. 37 Orchard St. Fri, Sat, Sun 8/31 to 9/2. FREE

3. Day Trip/Food/Culture – Mitsuwa Marketplace A little taste of Tokyo only a bus ride away. In Edgewater, NJ, this shopping center immerses you in Japanese culture with a food court, books, magazines, toys and a supermarket filled with Japanese products. Take the shuttle bus from Port Authority. $3 each way. All weekend.

4. Music/Party – Swimming with Sharks at The Standard’s Le Bain. Saturday 9/1, 3pm-9pm. FREE with RSVP.

5. Architecture – Vertical Tour at the Cathedral St. John the Divine. No need to go to Europe to tour a spectacular church. This tour takes you up to parts of the Cathedral you never knew existed! Saturday 9/1, 12pm still available. $15 Get tickets here.

6. Day Trip/Art – DIA:Beacon in Beacon, NY. Beautiful galleries filled with spectacular installations and all your favorite contemporary artists. MetroNorth from Grand Central or 125th Street gets you within steps of the building, 80-minute train ride. Train and admission package: $31.50 for Adults. All weekend.

7. Food/Views – La Marina in Inwood. It’s a waterfront resort in Manhattan. Beautiful views of the Hudson and GW Bridge. Take the A-train.

Alternatively in Food/Views: Brooklyn Crab in Red Hook on the waterfront. Free Shuttle Bus or the IKEA Water Taxi from Pier 11. All weekend.

8. Architecture Tour – Before Brooklyn Bridge Park. Learn about the history of Brooklyn’s waterfront with architectural historian and author, Matt Postal  Saturday 9/1, 11am.$20. Tickets.

9. Music – Troublemakers; Midnight at Arlene’s Grocery. Saturday 9/1, 12am. $10

10. Fun/Leisure – Unicycle Fest on Governors Island. World-famous riders will display their skills, and members of the public will have the opportunity to try one-wheel riding. Saturday 9/1 and Sunday 9/2, 12pm to 5pm. FREE.

11. Day Trip/Relaxation/Food/Fun – Spa Castle. Okay, maybe not so free or cheap but if you consider what a spa trip costs…this looks pretty good. We’ve yet to try, but have heard good things. A sort of “Disneyland” of spas, in Queens no less!  Weekdays $35; weekends $45.

12. Fun/Music/Food/Culture – West Indian Day Parade and Festival, Eastern Parkway near Brooklyn Bridge Museum. Labor Day, Monday 9/3 starts at 11am.

Also, in Comedy/Improv: The Friday Night Sh*w at the Magnet Theater in Chelsea. Friday 8/31, 11:30pm $5.

Also, in Food/Music/Beach: Caracas Rockaway at Rockaway Beach at 106th St. has music events Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 4pm. (Though, lately, we’re partial to the beautifully wide unpopulated beach at 67th, if you’re okay with limited food and bathrooms…shhh.)

These cracked me up when I saw them on Junkculture the other day. Danish artist/photographer Soren Dahlgaard uses dough in much of his artwork, including this series of Dough Portraits along with large installations that use 100 to 300kg of dough with extra yeast…imagine the possibilities!

Dahlgaard has traveled to different cities photographing his Dough Portraits, allowing his subjects to play with the roughly 20lb pieces of dough before placing it over their heads. Dough and bread may be things that everyone relates to, but when seen over people’s heads it definitely takes on a different quality.

This Fall the exhibit will be going from South Korea to Israel and Helsinki. Below is a video of the photographer at work last year at the Vancouver Biennale.

11. Food/Art – Family Dinner at Culturefix on the LES. Restaurant employees sit down to “family meal”. This meal is usually a one pot meal that is good. Gabriel Pericàs: Door Wedge Collection

This series of photos titled Cuñas (doorstops/door wedges in Spanish) was no exception.

Pericàs lives and works in Barcelona. He is currently working on an upcoming solo exhibition at Espai 13  titled The Nipple Slip Speech Performance. Here’s the description:

The Nipple Slip Speech Performance is developed as a speculative narrative that aims to explore the concept of distraction and, in a wider sense, our inability, sometimes, to keep a focused attention. It implies turning whatever is trivial, irrelevant, or plainly incidental, into high-ranked information, thus, canceling the importance accrued by any other message.
Through a fragmented narrative that follows the latest mass media hype of Nipple Slip phenomena, Gabriel Pericàs chooses to analyze different aspects related to absent-mindedness and mental lapse. This journey takes him progressively to accident and mishap, and shapes the collection of small sculptures, photographs and videos that are scattered across the exhibition space.

Straight Up: Cameron R. Neilson

New York based photographer Cameron R. Neilson has photographed a collection of images with his camera leveled and pointed straight up. The series of photographs is aptly titled Straight Up. The abstract angles and shapes created by photographing city architecture this way is surprising and dramatic. Both recognizable and yet new. Though we tend to look up to some degree when walking city streets, ‘straight’ up is a less common angle. The concept for Straight Up started in NYC and has since grown to include cities across the country, and eventually Europe.

Straight Up will be exhibited at Openhouse, 379 Broome Street here in New York opening this Thursday, August 15th through August 22nd.

Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective

This may be one of those you-had-to-be-there kind of situations, but seeing Rineke Dijkstra’s retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum this past Saturday was more exhilarating than I would have imagined and could probably convey in this post. This talented Dutch photographer’s portraits, both photographic and videographic, capture youth in all its sweetness, innocence, self-consciousness and more, in the faces of her subjects. She could not have made up these faces if she had painted them, and many of them have a 17th-Century Dutch painting quality even when the subjects are not Dutch! The photographs and their size have an imposing presence, but my favorites for sure were the videos, especially the top floor’s series Krazy House where each wall is projected with one video at a time of adolescents from Liverpool alternating between self-consciously dancing and thoroughly enjoying themselves rocking out while mouthing the words to the songs. These are so surprisingly engaging—as well as touching and amusing—which seems to be the general consensus watching the crowd in the center of the room remain for long periods and swivel their gaze uniformly and eagerly from one wall to the next as each video ends. If you’re not in NYC you can take a look at the videos below, but seeing them in person is obviously a completely different experience and highly recommended.

Though South African photographer Tom Buchanan shoots commercial work, his preferred personal work tends towards conceptual photographic portraits that usually incorporate people into landscape settings. This preference is evident in his series titled “Feature”, however the ‘people’ have been replaced with famous film stills of famous film stars as the portraits contained within television screens. There is a noir-ish humor in dropping these familiar images into the odd contexts.

Buchanan carried the TV around the country finding locations familiar to the viewer but alien to the characters in the beaming screens. Love it.

Adalberto Abbate: Selfportrait

Sicilian artist Adalberto Abbate lives and works in Palermo, Italy. His work ranges from sculpture to photography, as well as street and installation art, but in all its forms is political. His most recent solo exhibit, Selfportrait: Build/Destroy/Rebuild includes this series of ripped photographic portraits. According to Abbate, these represent our confused society in a continuous state of reprogramming and with that our identity as well. The ego is no longer I, but becomes You, He, She and Them. The lines between good and evil, responsibility and guilt, combat and resolution are all blurred causing irreparable damage. His exhibit at GAM, symbolizes the passage of energy, an idea of change, a charge from rage and consciousness that was concretely manifested in the Arab Spring.
