I stopped by Wanted Design this past weekend in NYC, a small fair showcasing product and furniture design from around the world, and one of several Design Week events going on in NYC right now. There was lots of interesting work (Design in Puerto Rico’s booth had an especially nice collection of objects) and the venue—The Tunnel—was an excellent choice with its designy atmosphere that integrates old and new NY so well. But it’s possible that, for me, the group that stole the show consisted of the SVA Product Design students and their ALSO! Project.

Hard to miss with their neon orange logos, these guys roamed the Tunnel with six interactive projects (several in carts) inviting visitors to view all the exhibits in unconventional ways. The stations included:
No. 1―BOOM -Objects would have a lot to tell us if only they could speak.
No. 2―HERE -Design moments, living unassumingly within the exhibition space.
No. 3―MASK – Ephemera into facade―catalogue to camouflage via die-cutting.
No. 4―TINY – How very different the world appears when scale is amplified.
No. 5―WARP – The show via kaleidoscope; composition through a variety of filters.
Bonus Track!―LIFT – Your telephone, on a journey, to and from a vantage point high above.

I personally only interacted with three of the projects but witnessed two others in use. The students were very engaging and enthusiastic, happy to explain their project to everyone interested and eager to get people to interact. With informative stickers at the ready to paste on your arm or leg, and kaleidoscopic interpretations of the surroundings, as well as viewfinders with images focusing on some of the unnoticed subtleties of the venue, these young designers were excited about the event and what their project brought to it. And rightly so. The Also Project showed creativity, interactivity, and focused on product design from function and form, through to branding, uniform-design, gadgetry and teamwork. Not to mention fun. Hats off to instructor and industrial designer Sinclair Smith of SVA’s Products of Design MFA program for taking his students on this great design journey.

You can read more about the Also Project here. Wanted Design is on through today 5/20 at 7pm.

MT Masking Tape Installation: Koji Iyama

This delightfully colorful tape installation designed by Koji Iyama took place in Sendai, Japan, as a promotion for mt masking tape. Iyama and his team set out to show the multiple/alternate uses of the bright and patterned rolls by covering the walls and floors—as well as other objects they came across—of a huge old garage and then hanging thousands of rolls from the ceiling. The visitors could walk through the space and peruse the tape selections on the tables as well. You can see a time-lapse video of the installation process below:

Amsterdam-based studio Graphic Surgery works across many genres and methods, but their constants are the use of black & white, and angular geometric abstract forms. They make and apply these images to their design work, public murals, installations and architecture too. Their recent collaboration with Penta Architecten was a garage door/gate they refer to as Gateway. Using oxidized Corten steel and perforation this dramatic and very urban looking entrance was created. I personally like their work best integrated with architecture. The urban and constructivist look really adds tension and excitement to the structures.

Sure, we’ve been Pantone-producted to death, but I have to say this may be the smartest concept to date. Underpantones! How clever is that? And, of course, Pantytones. Mark Design Studio in Capetown, South Africa are the creative souls behind these fun undergarments and if they haven’t put them into production yet, well, I don’t know what they’re waiting for. After all, if they had their way: “…it’s what every well-dressed designer would be wearing.”

I’m not exactly sure what designer/artist Trevor Jackson had in mind when he made these plates, but on the day after the U.S. Senate disappointingly blocked gun-control legislation, and based on the moniker “Agitdelft”—from Agitation Delft akin to Agitation Propaganda— under which the Seattle-based Jackson creates these ceramic works, I’m going to choose to interpret them as a make-love-not-war/pro-gun-control statement.

If you’re looking to purchase one of these ceramic pieces, you can do that here.

Though built about ten years ago, I don’t think I’ve ever come across the type-filled Wellington Writers Walk before. A project of the New Zealand Society of Authors, the waterfront park is full of bold concrete plaques and more subtle “benchmarks” emblazoned with 19 quotations from some of New Zealand’s best known writers, both past and present. The plaques have been designed by renowned typographer Catherine Griffiths and the benchmarks (some actual seats) by Wellington architect Fiona Christeller. Pretty impressive architypeture.

The latest from the folks at cartonLAB (previously here, here, & here) is their one-third of the Mustang Gallery’s three-part exhibit installation Diagrama de Venn (Venn Diagram)—in Alicante, Spain—which consists of a cumulative and collaborative process between three groups of artists: cartonLAB, street artist Rosh, and Erre Gálvez. Each artist will take their turn inhabiting the gallery space with a work that intervenes, interacts, and adds to, the previous artist’s installation, each in their own unique style. In addition, for each installation, the public was (and will be) enlisted to help with the production and installation aspects.

cartonLAB, along with the help of graphic and package design students, among others, made giant cardboard box people, climbing the gallery walls, lying on the gallery floor, as well as sitting and flying through the space. You can see in the bottom two photos Rosh’s work that followed; spray-painting some of the boxes and reconfiguring them into piles and graffitied walls. We’ll have to wait and see what Erre Gálvez will come up with toward the end of the month with his typographic(?) take.

I really like the collaborative concept behind Diagrama Venn. It’s got a bit of a Layer Tennis feel, only in 3D.

These are fabulous! Swissted is an ongoing project by NYC-based graphic designer Mike Joyce who owns Stereotype Design. Joyce has combined his love of music and Swiss modernism in this series of redesigned vintage punk, hardcore, new wave, and indie rock show flyers that delightfully play with type and color in the style of vintage Swiss posters from the 1950s and 60s emphasizing cleanliness and readability. One would think that the mix wouldn’t necessarily work, but as is evident above and in Mike Joyce’s recently released book of the same name, Swissted blends beautifully. Here’s Joyce’s thinking as told to mentalfloss:

“Punk has an anti-establishment ethos and Swiss modernism is very structured. But at the same time there’s a common thread between the two—the Swiss modernists purged extraneous decoration to create clear communication, while punk rock took on self-indulgent rock and roll and stripped it to its core. So I thought it would be an interesting study to combine the two and see what happened.”

There are many more to see over on the Swissted site…I had a very hard time limiting myself to the ones above.

Pae White: Typography Yarn Installation

Cool Typography Installation using 48km of thread by Pae White at South London GalleryCool Typography Installation using 48km of thread by Pae White at South London GalleryCool Typography Installation using 48km of thread by Pae White at South London GalleryClick to enlarge

Los Angeles artist Pae White creates site specific installations merging art, design, and architecture. Presently at the South London Gallery you can find her latest installation titled Too Much Night, Again where 48km of yarn is interwoven and criss-crossed into connecting supergraphic letterforms spelling out the words “Unmattering” on one wall and “Tiger Time” on the opposite one. The work was inspired by a period of insomnia which is hinted at in its name. Depending on your location within the space, the words emerge and fade. Pretty spectacular.

You can see the exhibit being mounted in the video below as well as White being interviewed about her process. And if you’re in London before May 12th, you can see it at the South London Gallery.

Filament Mind is an information-driven installation at the Teton County Library in Wyoming, designed to visualize the collective questions of library visitors through an interactive and dynamic spacial sculpture. Designed by Brian W. Brush and Yong Ju Lee of E/B office, Filament Mind illuminates searches in a flash of color and light through glowing bundles of fiber optic cables. Whenever any Wyoming public library visitor anywhere in the state performs a search of the library catalog from a computer, each of the 1000 fiber optic cables hanging above (totaling over 5 miles of cable) corresponds to a call number in the Dewey Decimal System, which organizes the library’s collection into approximately 1000 categories of knowledge. These category titles are displayed in text on the lobby’s south and north walls at the termination points of the fiber optic cables. For further clarification how the installation works watch the video below:

I love all of these photo collages by Ukrainian-born artist Sergei Sviatchenko who lives and works in Denmark. In his Less series, which seems to be an ongoing project started in 2004 with subtle variations such as Less Paint and Lessroyal, Sviatchenko takes familiar everyday objects and recontextualizes them delivering the imagery in new, dynamic forms.

These collages have a surreal bent to them that’s just great, and how about that wallpaper (third image down from the top)? That would be fun to have at home or in an office.

You can buy prints of some of Sviatchenko’s works here, and a recently released book on his work titled Everything Goes Right & Left If You Want It.

Some of my favorite “street art” is the type that occurs naturally, unplanned, with no single artist responsible. It’s the collage-like effect created by the little bits of postings and ads left behind and piled upon each other on billboards and plywood throughout the city. It’s actually been a longtime (unfulfilled) plan of mine to try to recreate this effect on a wall in my home. New York based photographer Mark Hartman has honed in on this very subject matter in his personal photo series project titled Billboards. He describes himself as curator, picking and choosing specific parts of these shredded walls, beautifully cropping and photographing them.

Morag Myerscough: Environmental Graphics

Studio Myerscough, Fun, colorful, type-filled environmental graphics and wayfinding systems. English designer Morag Myerscough creates environmental graphics combining a great sense of color with a great sense of typography; what could be better? Having started Studio Myerscough in 1993, the studio has collaborated with important architects and worked on spaces that range from museum exhibitions to five children’s dining rooms for the new Barts and The Royal London Children’s Hospital (four of which can be seen in the top four photos.) All of Myerscough’s work exudes happiness and fun, which seems like the perfect combination to bring a little joy to a children’s hospital. There’s much more to see on Studio Myerscough’s website as well as over on the Supergroup site.
