It’s hard not to think of Gotye’s Someone that I Used to Know video when looking at these works by Romanian duo Swarte. But love, anger, and heartbreak don’t seem to be on Corina Olaru and Manuela Vulpescu’s agenda. Instead, their collaborative series of 18 pieces titled One Square Meter of Roots combines painting, drawing, body art and, finally, photography, in an exploration of what made more than 70 tribes from all over the world able to survive and conserve themselves over time. The balance between emotions and symbols varies from one work to another, offering personal reflection and identification to and from the viewer with each artwork’s message and story explained here by the artists.

My favorite kind of street photography usually involves humor, but I’ve also noticed that I’m drawn to photographs that juxtapose large images, be they street art murals, bridge arches, or other structures, with miniature-looking people in front of them. Israeli photographer Natan Dvir combines both quite successfully in his series Coming Soon. Arriving in NYC in 2008, Dvir was struck by the super-sized ads/billboards at street level and their effect on the urban landscape, and began photographing them. The resulting images emphasize not only the evident contrast in size but socio-economic levels and ad-agency-dreamworld vs. reality as well.

You can see many more of Dvir’s photographs on his website or in person  at the Anastasia Photo Gallery on the Lower East Side in NYC where his work is being exhibited through May 19, 2013.

Jay Shells: Rap Quotes

I don’t pretend to know much about rap and even used to refer to Busta Rhymes as Buster (yeah, I know…) but I got a kick out of this project: Graphic artist Jay Shells brought together his love of rap and his keen sign-making abilities in his street art project titled The Rap Quotes. He made 30 official-looking street signs with rap lyrics that cite specific locations and posted the signs at those very locations. Everyone from Mos Def to GZA, Puff Daddy to Kanye West, and more are quoted.

I have to give a nod to a friend who had another rap lyric-related project idea a while back that we briefly worked on together: rap tees. Who knows? Could still happen…

You can follow @TheRapQuotes for more on Shells’ project.

I love all of these photo collages by Ukrainian-born artist Sergei Sviatchenko who lives and works in Denmark. In his Less series, which seems to be an ongoing project started in 2004 with subtle variations such as Less Paint and Lessroyal, Sviatchenko takes familiar everyday objects and recontextualizes them delivering the imagery in new, dynamic forms.

These collages have a surreal bent to them that’s just great, and how about that wallpaper (third image down from the top)? That would be fun to have at home or in an office.

You can buy prints of some of Sviatchenko’s works here, and a recently released book on his work titled Everything Goes Right & Left If You Want It.

Mark Hartman: Billboards

Mark Hartman Photography, Billboards, photo series of billboards with ripped down postings creating a collage effectMark Hartman Photography, Billboards, photo series of billboards with ripped down postings creating a collage effectMark Hartman Photography, Billboards, photo series of billboards with ripped down postings creating a collage effectClick to enlarge

Some of my favorite “street art” is the type that occurs naturally, unplanned, with no single artist responsible. It’s the collage-like effect created by the little bits of postings and ads left behind and piled upon each other on billboards and plywood throughout the city. It’s actually been a longtime (unfulfilled) plan of mine to try to recreate this effect on a wall in my home. New York based photographer Mark Hartman has honed in on this very subject matter in his personal photo series project titled Billboards. He describes himself as curator, picking and choosing specific parts of these shredded walls, beautifully cropping and photographing them.

One of the crowd-pleasers at this year’s Armory Show was the mixed media installation Dinner for Two by Rachel Lee Hovnanian; an elegantly set 16-foot table with a multi-tiered (wedding?) cake standing tall in its center while a holographic-looking mouse nibbles away at it. At each end of the table is an LCD screen with a three-minute looped video of a couple, the man on one end and the woman at the other. Their eyes never seem to meet as they look down and around while the familiar sounds of texts and ringing cell phones are heard relentlessly. Hovnanian comments on the piece (via artinfo):

“We’ve forgotten what is real. Fast food chains replaced cafes; children think a package of pink powder mixed with water is real lemonade made with freshly squeezed pink lemons. We think we have 1,000 real friends on Facebook. We are sucked into our screens and can’t find the time to separate from technology. Only when the power is down, or if we are visiting a remote place with no wireless, can we take a break.”

Perfectly demonstrated.

Attendant: Urinal-Turned-Sandwich-Shop

I’ve heard of sandwich shops with cool bathrooms (i.e. the now defunct Bar 89) but a bathroom-turned-sandwich shop? More specifically, an 1890s men’s urinal in London. That’s what partners Peter Tomlinson and Ben Russell did with their new cafe Attendant. After removing 12 layers of paint dating back to 1890 from the wrought iron entrance, cleaning up the stairs, and removing just a single wall from the downstairs space (see the before photos above), as well as investing $150,000 in the renovation including polishing up the urinals and inserting a wooden bar connecting them all, Attendant was born, with the kitchen taking over the old Attendant’s office space, hence the name. Definitely original, if a little strange.

Hense: Recontextualizing Church

What could be better than a graffiti mural? Multiple graffiti murals on one building. In this case, a Church in Washington D.C. Atlanta-based artist Hense was commissioned to paint the former church in D.C.’s up-and-coming arts district. Along with a small crew, some rollers, brushes, spray paint, acrylics and more, Hense and his team covered every inch of the structure with de Kooning-esque colors and Pollock-esque splatters and scribbles. Talk about an extreme makeover! The vibrantly colored transformation sits across from the future home of a 20,000 sq. ft. museum, how appropriate for this sculptural work. Hense’s installation is the perfect combination of contemporary abstract art and classic architecture that defines the artsy neighborhood. You can see Hense’s latest painted building in Atlanta, the WCAC, over here.

Imagine a home in which you could skateboard to the dining room table, or, for that matter, on it. That’s just what ex world champion pro-skater Pierre-André Senizergues (PAS) turned Sole Technology founder envisioned when he came up with PAS House or Casa PAS. Senizergues created the concept, but Gil Le Bon Delapointe is responsible for the cool design of the full-scale 753 sq. foot version that includes a sofa, bed, and even kitchen appliances. The skateboard ramp-style structure allows the inhabitants to skate or bike on virtually every surfaces. The prototype was made with a Malibu location in mind, overlooking the ocean, with three separate living areas connected by a continuous ribbon-like skateable surface. The execution of the actual house will be overseen by architect François Perrin.

Aram Bartholl: DVD Dead Drop & More

DVD Dead Drop at Museum of Moving Image, NYC, Aram Bartholl, interactive artDVD Dead Drop at Museum of Moving Image, NYC, Aram Bartholl, interactive art, participatory artDVD Dead Drop at Museum of Moving Image, NYC, Aram Bartholl, interactive art, participatory artI am so disappointed that I didn’t know about this when we were at the Museum of Moving Image last August. It seems that Berlin artist Aram Bartholl, who combines technology and art to create participatory works, was commissioned by the museum last summer to create a permanent installation on the side of the museum. DVD Dead Drop consists of an embedded slot-loading DVD burner on an exterior wall of the building, available to the public 24 hours a day. Visitors can insert a blank DVD-R and receive a digital art exhibition, a collection of media, or other monthly curated content, burned onto their disc. DVD Dead Drop is a continuation of Bartholl’s series of offline file-sharing networks in public spaces. Other Dead Drops consisted of USB flash drives cemented into walls and curbs encouraging a ‘read-write’ information ecosystem while the DVD version is ‘read-only’. You can follow the different content offerings over here, and see the video below for a demonstration of the process by the charming Bartholl himself.

More recently, Bartholl organized an event titled Vertical Cinema in Berlin, where hilarious vertical YouTube clips were projected full screen in smartphone style, but huge. Sounds like a fun idea that I hope the Museum of Moving Image will consider screening one night here in NYC. In the meantime, I’m due for another visit to the museum in Astoria, and will be sure to come armed with a blank dvd.

Hamburg-based Turkish-born artist Sakir Gökçebag creates fun installations using everyday objects. His toilet paper roll installations are part of two series: Trans-Layers I and II. The abstract shapes and movement that Gökçebag is able to get with these rolls are at once playful and elegant, not to mention completely surprising. And it doesn’t stop at toilet paper, no siree. Gökeçebag’s other works utilize everything from shoes, belts, umbrellas, brooms, measuring tapes, levels and other household tools, extending to his series of photographs of uniquely cut fruits & vegetables.

There’s much more to see on his site here.
